Trustee Lloyd joins Pride in Africa

“Having been involved with the charity for the past 3 years, it was fantastic to join Bhubesi Pride’s team this year, even for a short part of their journey.  As a trustee this gives me a huge insight into team dynamics and project work in-country, which can only strengthen my contribution going forward.

I initially volunteered my time with the charity back in 2010 producing their video content to help promote their work.  This involvement quickly grew and I found myself more and more engrossed with the fantastic work they were doing and more importantly where the charity was going.  I now consider myself a big part of Bhubesi Pride and do everything I can to support the project each year.

Within my first few hours of being in Rwanda I got a real feel for Africa, having lunch from a street vendor, catching an overcrowded bus, followed by hopping on the back of a motorbike up a muddy dirt track just to reach the school tournament in a very remote part of the Rulindo district.

It was wonderful to see the coaches in action; having been heavily involved with the selection process for this year’s team, but even better was seeing how happy the children were getting involved.

The following 2 weeks saw the team travel overland into Tanzania where we were based in Arusha and then Moshi.  I had the opportunity to meet with local supporters, monitor team logistics and give helpful insights and perspectives on various issues, to ensure charity objectives are achieved again this year.

During downtime, we got a real taste for the local area, visiting beautiful viewpoints, local landmarks and tasting local cuisine.  Even though the team work extremely hard 5 days a week, this certainly is a trip of a lifetime and an experience that will stay with them forever.

It was a whirlwind 2 weeks, but now back in sunny Cardiff, I can really reflect on where the charity has come over the past 3 years and where it is headed in the future.  I am extremely proud to be a part of the ‘Pride’.”
